How to get to the Wasdale Head Inn

Train/bus/taxi
The nearest main rail station is Seascale (near Gosforth). Since April 2018 a Sunday service has been reintroduced, whereas previously the nearest Sunday services ran from Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle. It is also possible to travel on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway then walk over the path via Burnmoor Tarn. Taxis can be booked to get you to and from the hotel if required.
A publicly funded minibus service linking Ravenglass, Nether Wasdale, Gosforth and Wasdale Head runs at weekends during the summer.
Driving
The easiest approach is to take the A595 then via either Santon Bridge or Gosforth, each of which can be approached by two well-signposted junctions, towards Wasdale.
If you are approaching the hotel from the South via Newby Bridge, then the road over Ulpha Fell is a quicker route than following the A595, and offers excellent views in good daylight weather, although the route is not recommended in icy weather or in poor visibility.
Please note that the road over Hardknott Pass is unsuitable for inexperienced drivers and for larger vehicles, is not recommended when dark and is usually impassable in icy weather.
Walking
It is of course possible to walk to Wasdale! We are happy to provide advice, but please don’t set out without a map and compass (or at the very least a fully charged phone and battery pack) and clothing suitable for mountain conditions – the weather on the hills can change very quickly at any time of year and differ greatly from down in the valleys.
